Welcome back:) Or should I say, “Welcome back:(,” because this book is pretty depressing right now.

Charlie begins Part 3 with a letter about his experience with LSD (a hallucinogenic drug) and his time in the hospital in the hospital thereafter. He tells Sam and Patrick what’s going on, and he uses cigarettes as a vice. He’s addicted within ten days.

Charlie gains a temporary happiness. The bad part about it is that he knows it’s temporary. He writes about trying to remember the good days when the bad days come. He also talks about his psychiatrist and the weird questions he asks him.

Mary Elizabeth asks Charlie to the Sadie Hawkins dance. He believes it’s for three reasons: Punk Rocky was in color, it had Michael’s poem, and he played Rocky. Charlie accepts Mary Elizabeth’s invitation, only because he believes it will make Sam jealous. Sadly, it doesn’t. In fact, Sam gives Charlie tips so that his relationship with Mary Elizabeth will go well. At the dance, Charlie let’s Mary Elizabeth talk the entire time, and he doesn’t like it. He was t ready to kiss her goodbye, and he admits he doesn’t think he ever will.

At the dance, Charlie’s sister and her boyfriend got into a big fight and broke up. She opens up to Charlie and tells him she’s pregnant. Charlie agrees to take her to the abortion clinic. While they’re there, Charlie remembers that his sister is the one who told him where babies come from. Regardless, he supposed her and takes care of her, and their bond grows. Charlies sister threatens to tell their parents about Charlie’s smoking habits, but he reminds her that she can’t, and they laugh. When they get home, Charlie’s sister covers everything up.

Charlie and Mary Elizabeth go in another date, and he writes in his letters about how annoyed he always is with her. He is tired of her always talking and making everything about herself. Mary Elizabeth monopolizes his family dinner with Sam and Patrick, and that is basically the last straw. However, he ignores his sister’s and psychiatrist’s advise and isn’t honest with her about how he feels.

Charlie screws everything up while playing truth or dare when Patrick dares him to kiss the prettiest girl in the room and he kisses Sam, rather than Mary Elizabeth. Patrick drives Charlie home and tells him its best to stay away for a while, so Charlie has no one to spend time with over spring break. When he can’t handle the loneliness any longer, he calls Bob. Now he’s addicted to pot.
